Heat pumps are an all-in-one solution for heating and cooling. They are a great choice if you’re ready to swap your window ACs for whole home cooling while also upgrading your heat. You can either upgrade your entire heating and cooling system or keep your current heating system and add cooling with a heat pump.
We replace oil, gas, and electric heating with heat pumps. A heat pump is almost always the best choice if your current system is broken, on its last legs, or is 10 years old or older. A heat pump is the clear choice for savings if you heat with oil or electric resistance. With natural gas, savings depend on your home and current systems. And with solar panels a heat pump is a no-brainer: your panels run the heat pump, so the bill is low or gone.
A heat pump doesn’t burn fossil fuels, so nothing is putting combustion byproducts into the air in your house, and the filters remove dust, pollen, smoke, and other impurities. Plus, you can even find models that let you control humidity levels.
No more deliveries to schedule, no tank to watch, and no paying whatever oil costs that week. Heating oil in Massachusetts is averaging over $6 a gallon, up about 75% from a year ago. The heat pump heats and cools, so you get air conditioning the oil system never gave you.
Baseboard and wall heaters turn electricity straight into heat. A heat pump moves heat instead, so it does the same job on far less of it, and it cools in summer too.
Gas homeowners usually call for one of three reasons: the boiler or furnace is near the end of its life, they want real air conditioning without adding a second system, or they want off fossil fuels. The furnace can stay as backup if you want it, which is what dual fuel is.
Either way, one system heats and cools. Which one fits depends on the house, and we install them all regularly.
If your home is heated by a furnace that blows warm air out of vents, you have ductwork, and a ducted system is probably the best fit. An air handler takes the heated or cooled air from the heat pump and blows it through the ducts, and into your rooms. Not sure if you have ducts? If your basement is unfinished, look up. Box-shaped metal tubes running off the furnace mean ductwork.
No ductwork, or ducts in rough shape, is no problem. Ductless systems called mini splits are a very popular solution: they’re a good option for multi-family houses, smaller houses, older houses, and anyone adding air conditioning to a heating system they are keeping or wanting room-by-room temperature control. They’re also great for homes heated by an oil boiler through baseboards or radiators, because they eliminate the need for new ductwork.
Sometimes the best answer combines the two. Ducts where they already run or can be easily installed (like an unfinished basement or attic), mini splits where it’s hard for ductwork to reach.
For some homes the right fit pairs a heat pump with the gas furnace you already have. The heat pump does the efficient everyday heating and cooling, and the furnace stays as optional backup for the coldest nights, on your preference.
